Meaning

Yamunashtakam (Vallabhacharya) English Meaning

With joy I bow to Yamuna, the cause of every spiritual attainment, rich with the shining dust of Murari's lotus feet; whose waters, fragrant with flowers from the fresh groves on her banks, carry the dark splendour of Krishna, father of Kama, whom gods and demons alike worship. Falling from the summit of Mount Kalinda, brilliant with her mighty flood, rising high as she leaps playfully over the great rocks in her path, rippling with a roaring current as though seated on a splendid swing, she who deepens love for Mukunda: glory to the daughter of the Sun. Bow to her who has come down to earth to purify the worlds, attended with many calls by parrots, peacocks, swans and other birds as if by loving companions; her waves are her arms, the gleaming sands are the pearls of her bracelets, and her banks are her lovely hips. Bow to her, the fourth beloved of Krishna. You who are adorned with endless virtues, praised by Shiva, Brahma and the gods, ever dark as a rain-laden cloud, who granted the wishes of Dhruva and Parashara; on whose banks stands holy Mathura, who are surrounded by all the gopas and gopis and rest in Krishna, the ocean of compassion: bring joy to my mind. It was by meeting you that the Ganga, born from Murari's lotus feet, became dear to him and able to grant every attainment to those who serve her. Only Lakshmi, as your fellow consort, could come to equal you. May you, Kalindi, beloved of Hari, dwell in my mind for ever. Salutations to you always, Yamuna; your ways are most wonderful. Whoever drinks your water never suffers the torments of Yama, for how could Yama strike his own sister's children, even wicked ones? By serving you one becomes as dear to Hari as the gopis. Beloved of Mukunda, may I receive a new body, fit for his service, in your presence; with that alone, love for Murari is no longer hard to win. So let your tender care be mine. The Ganga is glorified on earth only through her union with you; those firm in the path of grace never praise her apart from you. Dear fellow consort of Lakshmi, who can praise you enough? The bliss that comes from serving Hari reaches only as far as liberation, but your glory is greater still: you receive the drops of sweat from every limb of Krishna, wearied with love in his union with all the gopis. Daughter of the Sun, whoever joyfully recites this octet of yours every day is freed of all sins and gains love for Mukunda; through that love come all attainments, Murari is pleased, and one's own nature is conquered. So says Vallabha, Shri Hari's own.

Significance

Yamunashtakam (Vallabhacharya) Significance

Shri Vallabhacharya's hymn to Shri Yamunaji, the river goddess who is Krishna's beloved and the giver of love for him. It is the first of his sixteen short works (Shodasha Granthas) and is recited every day in Pushti Marg homes and havelis, above all by Gujarati Vaishnav families, and especially on Yamuna Chhath (Chaitra Shukla Shashthi). Eight verses describe Yamunaji's descent from Mount Kalinda, her beauty and her grace; the ninth gives the fruit of reciting it, and in it the author names himself Vallabha.
