Meaning
Vishnu Shatpadi English Meaning
O Vishnu, take away my arrogance; tame my mind; still the mirage-thirst for the things of the senses; widen my compassion for all beings; carry me across the ocean of worldly existence. I bow to the lotus feet of Lakshmi's lord, whose honey is the heavenly river, whose fragrance and enjoyment are existence, consciousness and bliss, and which cut away the fear and weariness of worldly life. Even when all difference has fallen away, O Lord, I am yours; you are not mine. For the wave belongs to the ocean; never does the ocean belong to the wave. O lifter of the mountain, younger brother of Indra, enemy of the demon clans, whose eyes are the sun and the moon: once you are seen and your power is present, does not the hold of worldly existence come to an end? O Supreme Lord, you who by your avatars, beginning with the Fish, ever protect the earth: I, who dread the burning of worldly life, am one you should protect. O Damodara, home of every virtue, Govinda with the lovely lotus face, Mandara mountain that churns the ocean of existence: take away my great fear. O Narayana, full of compassion, I take refuge in your feet. May this six-footed hymn, like a bee, dwell for ever on the lotus of my mouth.

Significance
Vishnu Shatpadi Significance
A short prayer to Vishnu in the arya metre, traditionally attributed to Adi Shankaracharya. Its name, 'six-footed' (a bee), plays on its six verses offered at Vishnu's lotus feet; a seventh verse asks that this 'bee' dwell for ever on the lotus of the devotee's mouth. It asks Vishnu to remove arrogance, calm the mind and widen compassion, and contains the well-known image that the wave belongs to the ocean, never the ocean to the wave.
