Meaning

Surya Ashtakam English Meaning

O first of the gods, I bow to you; be gracious to me, Bhaskara. Salutations to you, Divakara, maker of the day; salutations to you, Prabhakara, maker of light. I bow to that Surya: the blazing son of Kashyapa, who rides a chariot drawn by seven horses, the god who holds a white lotus. I bow to that Surya: the red one mounted on his chariot, grandsire of all the worlds, the god who takes away great sins. I bow to that Surya: the three gunas in one, the great hero who is Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshvara, the god who takes away great sins. I bow to that Surya: the vast mass of radiance, who is the wind and the sky as well, and the lord of all the worlds. I bow to that Surya: red as the bandhuka flower, adorned with necklace and earrings, the god who bears the single wheel. I bow to that Surya: the maker of the world, who kindles great radiance, the god who takes away great sins. I bow to that Surya: lord of the worlds, giver of knowledge, realisation and liberation, the god who takes away great sins. Let one recite this Suryashtakam daily; it removes the afflictions of the planets. The childless gain a son, and the poor become wealthy. One who eats meat and drinks liquor on the Sun's day is sick for seven births, and poor birth after birth. Those who on the Sun's day give up intimacy with women, oil, honey and meat suffer no illness, grief or poverty, and go to the world of the Sun.

Significance

Surya Ashtakam Significance

Eight verses in praise of Surya, each ending "I bow to that Surya", followed by three verses on the fruit of recitation (included here). sanskritdocuments and the Prabhata Stotranidhi introduce it as spoken by Samba, the son of Krishna, and it is popularly associated with the Samba Purana; some printings close it instead as "spoken by Shiva". It is commonly recited at sunrise, especially on Sundays; the last two verses ask for abstinence on that day.
