Shiva Chalisa English Meaning

Victory to Ganesha, son of Girija, the wise one who is the root of all that is auspicious. Ayodhyadas says: grant me the boon of fearlessness. Victory to the Lord of Girija, compassionate to the humble, who always protects the saints. The moon shines beautifully on your forehead, and your earrings are the hoods of cobras. Your body is fair and the Ganga flows from your head; you wear a garland of skulls, and your body is smeared with ash. The tiger skin you wear as your garment looks splendid; seeing your beauty, even the serpents are enchanted. At your left side sits the beloved daughter of Mother Maina, Parvati, in matchless beauty. The trident in your hand looks mighty; with it you always destroy your enemies. Nandi and Ganesha look as lovely beside you as lotuses in the middle of the ocean. Kartikeya, the dark-hued one and the lord of the ganas are there too; no one can put the beauty of this scene into words. Whenever the gods came and cried out to you, Lord, you took away their distress. When the demon Taraka caused great havoc, all the gods together came to you in supplication. At once you sent the six-faced Kartikeya, who struck him down in the twinkling of an eye. You yourself destroyed the demon Jalandhara; your glory is known throughout the world. You waged war against the demon Tripura and in your grace saved everyone. Bhagiratha performed severe austerities, and you, destroyer of Tripura, fulfilled his vow. Among givers there is none like you; your servants sing your praise at all times. The Vedas have sung your greatness, yet even they could not find the secret of you, who are beyond words and without beginning. When the ocean was churned, a blaze of poison arose; gods and demons alike were scorched and in despair. Then you took pity on them and came to their help, and so you came to be called Nilakantha, the blue-throated. When Ramachandra worshipped you, he conquered Lanka and gave it to Vibhishana. He was offering you a thousand lotuses when you, destroyer of Tripura, put him to the test. You, Lord, hid away one lotus; then the lotus-eyed Rama resolved to complete the worship with his own eye. Seeing such hard devotion, Lord Shankara was pleased and granted the boon he wished for. Victory, victory, victory to you, endless and imperishable, who dwell in every heart and show grace to all. All the wicked torment me constantly; I wander about and find no peace. Save me, save me, Lord, I cry to you; come now, at this hour, and rescue me. Take up your trident and strike down my enemies; come and rescue me from this trouble. Mother, father and brothers are all there, but in trouble no one asks after me. Lord, you are my only hope; come and take away my heavy trouble. You always give wealth to the poor; whoever asks of you receives the fruit. How can I praise you as you deserve? Lord, forgive my faults now. Shankara, you are the destroyer of troubles, the source of all good and the remover of obstacles. Yogis, ascetics and sages meditate on you; Sharada and Narada bow their heads to you. Salutations, salutations, victory: Namah Shivaya! Even the gods, Brahma and the rest, cannot reach the end of your glory. Whoever recites this with a devoted mind has Shambhu as a helper. Anyone burdened by debt who recites this is released and made pure. Whoever longs for a son to be born, by Shiva's grace that wish is surely fulfilled. On Trayodashi, the thirteenth day of the lunar fortnight, let one invite a priest and have a fire offering performed with devotion. One who always keeps the Trayodashi fast will have no affliction in body. Whoever offers incense, a lamp and food, and recites this before Shankara, is freed of the sins of birth after birth, and at the end reaches the abode of Shiva. Ayodhyadas says: my hope is in you; knowing all this, take away all our sorrows. Make it your daily rule to rise in the morning and recite this chalisa; Lord of the world, fulfil my heart's desire. In the month of Margashirsha, on the sixth day, in the Hemanta season of the year sixty-four, this chalisa in praise of Shiva was completed, for the good of all.

Shiva Chalisa |

Significance

Shiva Chalisa Significance

The best-known Hindi chalisa of Shiva: an opening doha to Ganesha, forty chaupais and closing dohas. It describes Shiva's form and family, recalls his deeds (the slaying of Taraka through Kartikeya, of Jalandhara and Tripura, drinking the poison of the churned ocean, and Rama's worship with a thousand lotuses), and closes with a prayer for protection and the rules for its recitation. The poet signs himself Ayodhyadas, and the last doha gives the date of composition as the sixth of Margashirsha in a year 'chausath' (…64) of an unnamed century. It is recited daily by many, and especially on Mondays, in the month of Shravan, on Pradosh (Trayodashi) and on Mahashivratri; the text follows the widely printed version, including the second closing doha.
