Meaning
Shani Stotra (Dasharatha) English Meaning
Salutations to the dark one, the blue one, whose hue is like the dark-blue throat of Shiva; salutations to him who is the fire of cosmic dissolution, to Kritanta, the bringer of the end. Salutations to him whose body is fleshless, who wears a long beard and matted locks; salutations to the wide-eyed one, of shrunken belly and fearsome form. Salutations to him of massive frame and thick, coarse hair; salutations to the tall, gaunt one. You whose fangs are like Time itself, salutations to you. Salutations to you with deep-sunken eyes, so hard to look upon; salutations to the terrible, the fierce, the dreadful one who carries a skull. Salutations to you who devour all; wrinkle-faced one, salutations to you. Son of the Sun, salutations to you; son of Bhaskara, giver of fearlessness, salutations. You of downcast gaze, salutations to you; Samvartaka, fire of the world's end, salutations to you. Salutations to you, the slow-moving one; salutations to you who are pitiless as a sword. Salutations to him whose body is burnt by austerity, who is ever devoted to yoga; salutations to him who is always hungry and never satisfied. Salutations to you whose eye is wisdom, grandson of Kashyapa. When pleased, you bestow a kingdom; when angered, you take it away that very moment. Gods, demons and men, siddhas, vidyadharas and serpents: all on whom your gaze falls are destroyed, root and all. Be gracious to me, son of the Sun; son of Bhaskara, be the giver of boons. Thus was Sauri, the mighty king of the planets, praised.

Significance
Shani Stotra (Dasharatha) Significance
The hymn with which King Dasharatha pacified Shani when the planet was about to pierce the 'cart of Rohini' (Rohini-shakata-bhedana), as told in the Padma Purana (Uttara Khanda, chapter 33). It salutes Shani's dark, gaunt and fearsome forms and his power to give and take away kingdoms, and asks for his grace. This is the form commonly printed in Hindi stotra books; it is recited on Saturdays and during Sade Sati, Dhaiya and Shani's dasha. Other texts called 'Dasharatha's Shani stotra' differ widely in wording and length.
