Meaning
Satyanarayan Aarti English Meaning
Victory to the beloved of Lakshmi, Shri Lakshmi's lord! Lord Satyanarayan, you take away the sins of the people. Your jewel-studded throne shines with wondrous beauty; Narada waves the lamp before you, and the bells ring out. For the sake of the Kali age you appeared and gave a vision to a Brahmin; taking the form of an old Brahmin, you turned his home into a golden palace. You showed grace to the poor Bhil woodcutter, and took away the misfortune of King Chandrachud. The merchant gained his heart's desire but abandoned his faith; Lord, he suffered the consequence and then sang your praise once more. For the sake of loving devotion you took on form after form, moment by moment; those who held to their faith had their work fulfilled. The king worshipped you in the forest together with the cowherd boys, and Hari, kind to the humble, gave him the fruit he longed for. The prasad is offered in a measure and a quarter, with bananas and dried fruits; Satyadeva, the Lord of Truth, is pleased with incense, lamp and tulsi. Whoever sings this aarti of Shri Satyanarayan gains happiness of body and mind, wealth, and the fruit the heart desires.

The aarti sung at the close of the Satyanarayan Katha, the worship of Vishnu as the Lord of Truth that many families perform on full-moon days, at housewarmings and on other auspicious occasions. Its stanzas retell the episodes of the katha: the poor Brahmin, the Bhil woodcutter, King Chandrachud, the merchant who forgot his vow, and the king who joined the cowherds' worship, and end with the offering of prasad, tulsi and the lamp. The text follows the Gita Press Aarti Sangrah, which matches the version printed by Bharatkosh and Kavitakosh.
