Meaning

Saraswati Vandana English Meaning

May the blessed goddess Saraswati protect me: she who is white as the jasmine, the moon, snow and a string of pearls, who is robed in white, whose hands are graced by the fine staff of the vina, who is seated on a white lotus, who is ever worshipped by Brahma, Vishnu, Shiva and the other gods, and who wholly removes all dullness of mind. I bow to Sharada, the supreme goddess, the blessed one who grants understanding: white in colour, the highest essence of the contemplation of Brahman, the primal one who pervades the universe, holding the vina and the book, granting fearlessness, dispelling the darkness of ignorance, a crystal rosary in her hand, seated on the lotus.

Significance

Saraswati Vandana Significance

The two Sanskrit meditation verses most often recited together as the Saraswati Vandana: 'Ya kundendu…' and 'Shuklam brahmavichara…'. The first is also the opening verse of the Saraswati Stotram traditionally ascribed to the sage Agastya; the second is a traditional verse of meditation on Sharada whose author is not recorded. They are sung at Saraswati Puja and Vasant Panchami, before study, and as a school prayer.
