sāmāiya-vaya-jutto, jāva maṇe hoi niyama-saṃjutto | chinnaï asuhaṃ kammaṃ, sāmāiya jattiyā vārā ||1|| sāmāiyammi u kae, samaṇo iva sāvao havaï jamhā | eeṇa kāraṇeṇaṃ, bahuso sāmāiaṃ kujjā ||2||
Meaning
Samaiya Vaya Jutto Sutra English Meaning
As long as one keeps the samayika vow and the mind stays joined to its discipline, one cuts away inauspicious karma — every single time one does samayika. For while samayika is being done, the lay follower becomes like a monk; for this reason one should do samayika often.

जब तक श्रावक सामायिक-व्रत से युक्त है और उसका मन नियम में स्थिर रहता है, तब तक वह अशुभ कर्मों को काटता है — जितनी बार सामायिक करे, उतनी बार। क्योंकि सामायिक करते समय श्रावक साधु के समान हो जाता है, इसलिए बार-बार सामायिक करनी चाहिए।

Samaiya Vaya Jutto Sutra Significance
Samaiya-vaya-jutto is the Shvetambara Murtipujak sutra for concluding (paarna) a samayika: its two gathas recall that samayika cuts away inauspicious karma and makes the lay follower like a monk, and urge that it be done often. Prabodh Tika traces the gathas in samayika-closing rites of the 15th century, such as Vardhamanasuri's Acharadinakara (VS 1468) and Hemahamsagani's Shadavashyaka-balavabodha (VS 1501). Most Murtipujak books follow them with two short Gujarati lines of micchami dukkadam for faults of procedure and the thirty-two faults of samayika, which are not included here; Sthanakvasi practice closes samayika with a different formula.
