Panchindiya Sutra English Meaning

He restrains the five senses and keeps the nine safeguards of celibacy; he is free of the four passions — anger, pride, deceit and greed. So he is endowed with eighteen virtues. He keeps the five great vows, is able to uphold the five kinds of conduct, practises the five samitis (forms of carefulness) and the three guptis (restraints of mind, speech and body). One with these thirty-six virtues is my guru.

Significance

Panchindiya Sutra Significance

The Panchindiya Sutra, or Guru-sthapana Sutra, lists the thirty-six virtues of an Acharya: restraint of the five senses, the nine safeguards of celibacy, freedom from the four passions, the five great vows, the five kinds of conduct, the five samitis and the three guptis. In Shvetambara Murtipujak Samayik and Pratikraman it is recited right after the Navkar to establish the guru's presence, before a living guru or before a symbolic sthapanacharya. Sthanakvasi books recite the same two gathas as the 'Guru-guna path'.
