Meaning

Om Jai Shiv Omkara English Meaning

Om, victory to Shiva, the sacred syllable Om; victory, Lord, to Shiva, the Om! He is Brahma, Vishnu and Sadashiva, and he bears his consort as half of his own body. One-faced as Vishnu, four-faced as Brahma and five-faced as Shiva, you shine; you are splendid seated on the swan, on Garuda and on the bull. With two arms, with four arms and with ten, you look most beautiful; beholding your form of the three gunas, the people of all three worlds are enchanted. You wear the rosary of prayer beads, the garland of wild flowers and the garland of skulls; you are the destroyer of Tripura, the slayer of Kamsa, and the one who holds a rosary in his hand. On your body are white robes, yellow robes and the tiger skin; with you are Sanaka and the other sages, Garuda and his kind, and the hosts of spirits. In your hands are the water-pot, the discus and the trident; you bring happiness, take away sorrow and sustain the world. Only the undiscerning think of Brahma, Vishnu and Sadashiva as separate; in the sacred syllable Om these three shine as one. Lakshmi, Savitri and Parvati are with you; Parvati is half of your body, and the Ganga flows as Shiva's own wave. Parvati graces the mountain and Shankara dwells on Kailasa; bhang and datura are his food, and he makes his home in ashes. The Ganga flows in his matted locks and a garland of skulls hangs at his throat; the serpent Shesha coils around him, and he wraps himself in a deer skin. In Kashi he is enthroned as Vishwanath, with Nandi the celibate beside him; devotees rise every day to receive his darshan, so great is his glory. Whoever sings this aarti of the Lord of the three gunas, says Shivanand Swami, receives the fruit the heart desires.

Om Jai Shiv Omkara Hindi Meaning

Significance

Om Jai Shiv Omkara Significance

The best-known Hindi aarti of Shiva, sung while the lamp is waved at the close of Shiva worship, and especially popular on Mondays, in the month of Shravan and on Mahashivratri. It praises Shiva together with Brahma and Vishnu as three forms of the one syllable Om, then pictures Shiva with Parvati and the Ganga, on Kailasa and as Vishwanath of Kashi; its last verse carries the signature of Shivanand Swami, whom Gujarati literary histories identify with Shivanand Pandya of 17th-century Surat. The text follows the commonly sung twelve-stanza version opening 'ॐ जय शिव ओंकारा, स्वामी जय शिव ओंकारा', as printed by drikpanchang, bhaktibharat and shubhpanchang; the Gita Press Aarti Sangrah prints the older core of eight stanzas (1–7 and 12 here).
