Meaning

Navkar Mantra English Meaning

I bow to the Arihantas, who have conquered the inner enemies (attachment and aversion) and attained perfect knowledge. I bow to the Siddhas, the liberated souls. I bow to the Acharyas, the heads of the order. I bow to the Upadhyayas, who teach the scriptures. I bow to all the Sadhus and Sadhvis in the world. This fivefold salutation destroys all sins, and of all auspicious things it is the first and foremost.

Significance

Navkar Mantra Significance

The Navkar Mantra (Namaskar Mahamantra, Namokar Mantra) is the most fundamental prayer of Jainism, recited in every Jain tradition. Its five padas salute virtues rather than individuals — the five Parameshthis: Arihanta, Siddha, Acharya, Upadhyaya and Sadhu — and the four-line chulika that follows calls this fivefold salutation the destroyer of all sins and the first of all auspicious things, making nine padas and 68 syllables in all. It opens every Samayik, Pratikraman and puja and is counted on the navkarvali of 108 beads. The text follows the Shvetambara sutra books (नमो, नमुक्कारो); Digambaras write णमो and recite the chulika as एसो पंच णमोयारो … पढमं होइ मंगलं.
