Meaning
Namutthunam (Shakrastava) English Meaning
Salutation to the Arihantas, the Bhagavants — who begin the dharma in their age, who found the tirtha (the fourfold community), who awaken by themselves; the highest among beings, lions among beings, the finest white lotuses among beings, the noblest scent-elephants among beings (whose mere presence drives calamity away); highest in the world, lords of the world, benefactors of the world, lamps of the world, who fill the world with light; givers of fearlessness, givers of the eye of insight, givers of the path, givers of refuge, givers of bodhi; givers of dharma, teachers of dharma, leaders of dharma, charioteers of dharma, supreme emperors of dharma who bring the four states of rebirth to an end; who hold unobstructed, supreme knowledge and perception, and from whom every veil has fallen away; conquerors who help others conquer, who have crossed over and carry others across, awakened and awakening others, free and freeing others; all-knowing and all-seeing, who have reached the state called Siddhi-gati — blissful, unmoving, free of disease, endless, imperishable, untroubled, from which there is no return: salutation to the Jinas, who have conquered all fear. Those who became Siddhas in the past, those who will become Siddhas in time to come, and those living now — all of them I salute in three ways, with mind, speech and body.

Significance
Namutthunam (Shakrastava) Significance
Namutthunam, the Shakrastava or 'hymn of Indra', salutes the Arihantas through a long chain of epithets; tradition holds that Shakra, king of the gods, recites it when a Tirthankara is conceived or born. It is the principal sutra of Chaityavandan and is recited in Pratikraman; the nine sampadas are Agamic, while the closing gatha to past, present and future Jinas is a later addition that Prabodh Tika notes is absent from the Agamic versions. Sthanakvasi books omit that gatha, add 'jiva-dayanam' and 'divo tanam sarana-gai-paitthanam', and recite the hymn twice — to the Siddhas and to the Arihantas.
