Mere To Giridhar Gopal |

Lyrics

Mere To Giridhar Gopal Lyrics

Meaning

Mere To Giridhar Gopal English Meaning

Mine is Giridhar Gopal, the cowherd who lifted the mountain, and no one else. He who wears the peacock-feather crown, he alone is my husband. Father, mother, brother, kinsman: none of them is my own. I have cast off the family's code of honour; what can anyone do to me now? Sitting again and again among the saints, I have lost all worldly shame. I tore my bright chunari to pieces and wrapped myself in a plain woollen blanket; I took off my pearls and corals and strung a garland of forest flowers instead. Watering it again and again with my tears, I planted the vine of love. Now the vine has spread far and wide, and it bears the fruit of bliss. With great love I churned the pot of milk. Now that I have drawn out the butter, its essence, let whoever wishes drink the buttermilk. Seeing devotion, I rejoiced; seeing the ways of the world, I wept. Mira, your servant, prays: beloved Giridhar, carry me across now.

Significance

Mere To Giridhar Gopal Significance

One of Mirabai's best-known pads. Meera declares that Krishna, Giridhar Gopal, is her only kin and her husband, and tells how she gave up family honour, finery and the world's opinion for the company of saints, watering the 'vine of love' with her tears until it bore the fruit of bliss. This is the standard Padavali text that is printed and sung in bhajan gatherings everywhere. Some popular recordings splice in lines from another Meera pad ("कोई कहे कारो…"); those are not included.
