Meaning

Maruti Stotra (Bhimrupi) English Meaning

O you of fearsome form, great Rudra, Hanuman strong as the thunderbolt, Maruti; ravager of the (Ashoka) grove, son of Anjani, messenger of Rama, mighty as the storm wind! Mighty one, giver of life, who by your strength raised them all up again; bringer of joy and remover of sorrow, shrewd one, devotee of Vishnu, singer of the Lord's praise! Protector of the helpless, one in form with Hari, beautiful one who dwells within the world; slayer of the deity of the netherworld, anointed with splendid vermilion! Lord of the people, lord of the world, lord of the life-breath, ancient one; full of merit, virtuous in conduct, purifier, giver of contentment! He raised his arm high like a banner and surged forward in fury; at the sight of him even the fire of doomsday and Rudra's fire of dissolution tremble with fear. As he set his rows of teeth, it seemed the universes themselves were held within; flames streamed from the fire of his eyes, and his brows drew tight with power. His tail is curled up over his head; he wears a crown and handsome earrings, a golden loincloth at the waist, and graceful bells and tinkling ornaments. He stands poised like a mountain, trim and lithe; yet when you look, his nimble form is vast, like a great streak of lightning. With leaps of millions upon millions he sprang towards the north, and in his fury tore up by force the Drona mountain, huge as Mandara. He brought it, carried it back again, came and went at the speed of thought; he left the mind itself behind. There is nothing to compare with his speed. From the size of an atom he grows until he is as large as the universe. Where is his equal? Beside him even Meru and Mandara are small. With his adamantine tail he can wind coils around the universe. What could compare with him? Search the whole universe and there is none. Seeing the red Sun with his eyes, he seized the Sun's disc; growing and growing, he grew until he pierced the sphere of the sky. Wealth and grain, increase of cattle, sons and grandsons, all of these, and beauty, learning and more, are gained by reciting this hymn. Ghosts, spirits, restless shades and the like, and every disease and ailment, perish; worries are cut away, through the joyful sight of Bhima, the mighty Maruti. Hold fast to this fifteen-verse hymn, a fine and radiant gain: it brings a firm body and a mind free of doubt, its count matching the digits (kalas) of the moon. Foremost among the servants of Rama, the jewel of the monkey race, whose inner self is one with Rama: at the sight of him all faults are destroyed.

Significance

Maruti Stotra (Bhimrupi) Significance

Samarth Ramdas's Marathi hymn to Hanuman (Maruti), known from its opening word as "Bhimrupi"; its colophon names it Sankata-nirasana, "the dispeller of troubles". It praises Maruti's fearsome form, his flight to fetch the Drona mountain and his boundless growth, and closes with verses on the fruit of recitation and Ramdas's signature verse. It is recited daily in Maharashtrian homes and traditionally in akharas (wrestling gymnasiums). The widely printed text, given here, has 17 verses; R. D. Ranade's Ramdas-Vachanamrut (1926) gives 16, without verse 14.
