Maiya Mori Main Nahin Makhan Khayo Lyrics

Meaning
Maiya Mori Main Nahin Makhan Khayo English Meaning
Mother dear, I did not eat the butter! At daybreak you sent me off behind the cows to the Madhuban woods; all day long, four watches, I wandered about Vanshivat, and I came home only at dusk. I am just a little boy with short arms; how could I ever reach the pot hanging up high? All the cowherd boys have turned against me; they smeared the butter on my face by force. Mother, you are far too simple-hearted; you believed what they told you. Some doubt must have sprung up in your heart, that you take me for someone else's child. 'Here, take back your stick and your blanket; you have made me dance to your tune long enough!' Then, says Surdas, Yashoda burst out laughing and hugged him to her heart.

Significance
Maiya Mori Main Nahin Makhan Khayo Significance
The best-loved Makhan Chori bhajan. Caught with butter on his face, little Krishna argues his innocence to Yashoda: he was out with the cows all day, his arms are too short to reach the hanging pot, and the other boys smeared it on him. Then he hands back his stick and blanket in mock protest, and she laughs and hugs him. It is popularly known as a pad of Surdas, carries his name and is taught in NCERT's Class 6 Hindi reader, but it is not found in the Nagari Pracharini Sabha Sursagar or Gita Press's Shri Krishna Bal Madhuri; those editions have a different Surdas pad with the same refrain (see variants).
