Meaning

Logassa Sutra English Meaning

I will sing the praise of the Arihantas: the Jinas who bring light to the world and found the ford of dharma, the all-knowing Kevalis — the twenty-four, and others too. I bow to Rishabha and Ajita, to Sambhava, Abhinandana and Sumati; I bow to Padmaprabha, Suparshva and the Jina Chandraprabha. I bow to Suvidhi, also called Pushpadanta, to Shitala, Shreyamsa and Vasupujya, to Vimala and the Jina Ananta, to Dharma and to Shanti. I bow to Kunthu, Ara and Malli, to Munisuvrata and the Jina Nami; I bow to Arishtanemi, to Parshva, and to Vardhamana (Mahavira). Thus praised by me — free of the dust and grime of karma, beyond old age and death — may the twenty-four best of Jinas, the Tirthankaras, be gracious to me. Praised, saluted and worshipped, these highest beings of the world, the Siddhas — may they grant me spiritual health, the gain of bodhi (true insight), and the finest, highest samadhi. Purer than the moons, more radiant than the suns, deep as the greatest ocean — may the Siddhas grant me siddhi, final liberation.

Significance

Logassa Sutra Significance

The Logassa, or Chaturvimshati-stava ("hymn of the twenty-four"), names and praises the twenty-four Tirthankaras of this age and asks the Siddhas for bodhi, samadhi and liberation; it is the second of the six Avashyakas. It is recited in every Samayik, Chaityavandan and Pratikraman: aloud after the kayotsarga that follows Iriyavahiyam, Tassa Uttari and Annattha, and silently during kayotsarga, often only up to "chandesu nimmalayara". The text follows the Shvetambara Murtipujak sutra books; Sthanakvasi and Terapanthi books spell some words with y (ujjoyagare, usabhamajiyam), and the Digambara tradition knows the hymn within its Tirthankara-bhakti, with one extra verse.
