Kalabhairava Ashtakam English Meaning
Whose holy lotus feet are served by Indra, king of the gods; who wears a serpent as his sacred thread and the moon as his crest; the merciful one, praised by Narada and the hosts of yogis, clothed only in the sky: I worship Kalabhairava, lord of the city of Kashi. Radiant as ten million suns, the supreme one who carries us across the ocean of worldly life; blue-throated, granting every wish, three-eyed; Death even to Death, lotus-eyed, holding rosary and trident, imperishable: I worship Kalabhairava, lord of the city of Kashi. Holding trident, axe, noose and staff, the first cause of all; dark of body, the primal god, imperishable and free from all affliction; the lord of fearsome might who delights in the wondrous tandava dance: I worship Kalabhairava, lord of the city of Kashi. Giver of worldly joy and of liberation, of glorious and handsome form; tender to his devotees, abiding with all the worlds as his body; his waist shining with a golden girdle of sweetly tinkling bells: I worship Kalabhairava, lord of the city of Kashi. Guardian of the bridge of dharma, destroyer of the ways of adharma; who frees us from the bonds of karma and grants true happiness, the all-pervading lord; his body adorned with golden coils of serpents: I worship Kalabhairava, lord of the city of Kashi. Whose two feet are lovely with the gleam of jewelled sandals; eternal, without a second, the chosen deity, untouched by any stain; who breaks the pride of Death, with fearsome tusks, the giver of liberation: I worship Kalabhairava, lord of the city of Kashi. Whose loud laughter shatters the shells of the cosmic eggs born of Brahma, one after another; whose glance destroys the net of sin; stern in his rule, giver of the eight siddhis, wearing a garland of skulls: I worship Kalabhairava, lord of the city of Kashi. Leader of the hosts of spirits, giver of wide renown; the lord who weighs and cleanses the merit and sin of those who live in Kashi; wise in the ways of right conduct, the ancient one, master of the world: I worship Kalabhairava, lord of the city of Kashi. Those who recite this charming Kalabhairava Ashtakam — a means to knowledge and liberation, which increases merit of many kinds and destroys sorrow, delusion, want, greed, anger and torment — surely reach the presence of Kalabhairava's feet.
