Meaning
Jagannathashtakam English Meaning
He who at times fills the groves on the Yamuna's banks with the sound of his music; who joyfully, like a bee, savours the lotus faces of the cowherd women; whose feet are worshipped by Lakshmi, Shiva, Brahma, Indra and Ganesha: may that Jagannatha, the Lord, come within the path of my eyes. He who holds the flute in his left hand, a peacock feather on his head and fine silk at his waist, and casts sidelong glances at his companions from the corners of his eyes; who ever delights in his play of living in lovely Vrindavana: may that Jagannatha, the Lord, come within the path of my eyes. He who, on the shore of the great ocean, on the Blue Hill bright as gold, dwells within the temple with his mighty brother Balabhadra, with Subhadra between them, and gives every god the chance to serve him: may that Jagannatha, the Lord, come within the path of my eyes. An ocean of mercy, lovely as a line of rain-laden clouds; the delight of Lakshmi and Sarasvati, his face a bright and spotless lotus; worshipped by the chief of the gods, his deeds sung by the summits of the Vedas: may that Jagannatha, the Lord, come within the path of my eyes. He who, riding his chariot along the road, hears at every step the hymns poured out by the crowds of brahmins gathered there and is moved to kindness; ocean of mercy, friend of all the worlds, with Lakshmi, daughter of the ocean: may that Jagannatha, the Lord, come within the path of my eyes. The supreme Brahman, crown of all, with eyes wide like the petals of a blue lotus; who dwells on the Blue Hill and has set his feet on the head of Ananta; the bliss of divine love, delighting in the embrace of Radha's loving form: may that Jagannatha, the Lord, come within the path of my eyes. I do not ask for a kingdom, nor for the wealth of gold and rubies; I do not beg for a lovely bride whom all desire. Only may Jagannatha, the Lord, whose deeds Shiva, lord of the Pramathas, sings at every season, come within the path of my eyes. O lord of the gods, quickly take away this empty round of worldly life; O lord of the Yadavas, take away the endless spread of my sins. Surely it is certain that he gives the shelter of his feet to the lowly and the friendless: may that Jagannatha, the Lord, come within the path of my eyes. Whoever, pure and attentive, recites this sacred Jagannathashtakam is cleansed of every sin and goes to the world of Vishnu.

Significance
Jagannathashtakam Significance
Eight verses to Jagannatha of Puri, each ending with the prayer 'may Jagannatha, the Lord, come within the path of my eyes', with a closing verse on the merit of reciting it. They recall Krishna on the banks of the Yamuna and describe Jagannatha on the Blue Hill by the sea with Balabhadra and Subhadra, and riding his chariot through the crowds at the Ratha Yatra. Traditionally attributed to Adi Shankaracharya (some traditions credit Sri Chaitanya), it is sung especially at Puri and during the chariot festival. The text is the commonly sung version; Sringeri's edition differs in several words (see variants).
