Meaning

Iriyavahiyam Sutra English Meaning

(Disciple:) "Venerable one, of your own will please permit me: may I do pratikramana for the faults of the path?" (On the guru's assent:) "I accept. I wish to turn back — — from the harm done to living beings while moving about on the path, in going and coming, by treading on living creatures, on seeds and on green plants, and by trampling dew, ant-holes, moss and fungus, living water and earth, and spiders' webs. Whatever living beings I have harmed — beings with one sense, two senses, three senses, four senses or five senses — if I have struck them, covered them with dust, crushed them against the ground, heaped them together, touched and troubled them, tormented them, exhausted them, frightened them, moved them from place to place, or taken their life, may that wrongdoing of mine be undone (micchami dukkadam)."

Significance

Iriyavahiyam Sutra Significance

The Iriyavahiyam (Airyapathiki) Sutra is the short pratikramana for harm done to living beings while moving about. It asks the guru's leave, names the kinds of beings and the ways of hurting them, and ends with "micchami dukkadam" — may that wrongdoing of mine be undone. In the Shvetambara Murtipujak sequence it opens Samayik, Chaityavandan and Pratikraman and is followed by Tassa Uttari, Annattha and a kayotsarga; Sthanakvasi books recite essentially the same text as the 'Alochana path'. The verses are divided by the seven traditional sampadas (pauses).
