Guru Stotram English Meaning
Salutations to the revered guru who showed me that state: the undivided, all-encompassing Whole by which everything moving and unmoving is pervaded. Salutations to the revered guru who, with the slender rod that applies the salve of knowledge, opened the eyes of one blinded by the darkness of ignorance. The guru is Brahma, the guru is Vishnu, the guru is the god Maheshvara; the guru alone is the Supreme Brahman. Salutations to that revered guru. Salutations to the revered guru who showed me that state which pervades whatever exists, the fixed and the moving, the living and the lifeless. Salutations to the revered guru who showed me that state, pure consciousness, which fills all three worlds with everything moving and unmoving in them. Salutations to the revered guru whose lotus feet shine with the crest-jewel of all the scriptures, the Upanishads, and who is the sun that makes the lotus of Vedanta bloom. Salutations to the revered guru who is pure awareness, eternal and at peace, beyond space and without stain, beyond bindu, nada and kala, the subtle stages of sound and form. Salutations to the revered guru who is established in the power of knowledge, adorned with the garland of truth, and who grants both worldly fulfilment and liberation. Salutations to the revered guru who, by giving knowledge of the Self, burns away the bonds of karma gathered over many births. The water that has bathed the guru's feet truly dries up the ocean of worldly existence and makes known the wealth that is the essence of all. Salutations to that revered guru. There is no truth higher than the guru, no austerity greater than the guru, and nothing beyond the knowledge of truth. Salutations to that revered guru. My lord is the lord of the universe; my guru is the teacher of the whole world; my Self is the Self of all beings. Salutations to that revered guru. The guru is the beginning of all and is himself without beginning; the guru is the highest deity, and there is nothing higher than the guru. Salutations to that revered guru. You alone are my mother and my father, my kinsman and my friend; you alone are my learning and my wealth; you alone are my all, O God of gods.

A hymn of fourteen verses in praise of the guru, each of the first thirteen ending 'tasmai shri-gurave namah', 'salutations to that revered guru'. Most of its verses also occur, some with different wording, in the Guru Gita, a dialogue of Shiva and Parvati ascribed to the Skanda Purana; the closing verse, 'tvameva mata', comes from the Pandava Gita. It is widely chanted at the start of classes and satsangs and on Guru Purnima.
