Significance
Guru Mantra (Gurur Brahma) Significance
The best-known verse in praise of the guru, honouring the teacher as Brahma, Vishnu and Maheshvara and as the Supreme Brahman itself. It comes from the Guru Gita, a dialogue between Shiva and Parvati whose colophons place it in the Skanda Purana, and it is recited before lessons, at the start of worship and on Guru Purnima. The common recitation, given here, reads 'guruh sakshat parabrahma' in the second line, where Guru Gita texts read 'gurureva param brahma'.
