Ganesh Chalisa English Meaning
Victory to Ganapati, abode of all virtues, eloquent as the finest of poets and full of grace; remover of obstacles and maker of all that is auspicious, victory, victory to Girija's darling! Victory, victory, victory to Ganapati, king of the ganas, who fills life with good and brings every work to an auspicious end. Victory to the elephant-faced one, home and giver of happiness, Vinayaka of the whole world, who bestows wisdom. Your curved trunk is pure and lovely, and the three-lined tilak on your forehead delights the mind. A garland of gems and pearls shines on your chest; a golden crown is on your head, and your eyes are large. In your hands are a book, an axe and a trident; you are offered modaks and fragrant flowers. A beautiful yellow robe adorns your body, and your sandalled feet shine in the hearts of the sages. Blessed are you, son of Shiva and brother of six-faced Kartikeya, darling of Gauri, renowned throughout the world. Riddhi and Siddhi wave the fly-whisks over you, and your mount, the mouse, looks splendid at your door. Let me tell the auspicious story of your birth, most pure, holy and full of blessing. Once the daughter of the king of mountains performed great austerities to have a son. When her matchless sacrifice was complete, you arrived in the guise of a Brahmin. Taking you for a guest, Gauri was delighted and served you in many ways. Greatly pleased, you granted the boon for which the mother had performed her austerities: 'You shall have a son of great wisdom, at this very moment, without bearing him in the womb, a leader of the ganas, a treasury of virtue and knowledge, a divine form worshipped first of all.' Saying this, you vanished, and appeared in the cradle in the form of a baby. When you, as an infant, began to cry, Gauri looked at your face and could not contain her joy. Everyone was overjoyed and sang songs of blessing, and the gods showered flowers from the sky. Shambhu and Uma gave away gifts in abundance, and gods, sages and people came to see the son. Seeing the great joy and the festive splendour, King Shani too came to see him. But Shani, mindful of his own baleful nature, did not wish to look at the child. Girija felt hurt: 'Shani, my celebration does not please you!' Shani, hesitant at heart, said: 'What will you gain by showing me the child?' Uma did not believe him in her heart, and asked Shani to look at the child. As soon as the glance from the corner of Shani's eye fell on him, the child's head flew off into the sky. Girija fell to the ground in anguish; that state of sorrow cannot be described. A cry of grief rose over Kailasa: Shani, by his look, had destroyed the son. At once Vishnu set out on Garuda, and with his discus cut off an elephant's head and brought it back. He set it on the child's body, and Shankara, reciting the mantra of life, breathed life into him. Then Shambhu named him Ganesha and gave him the boon of being worshipped first, a treasury of wisdom. When Shiva set a test of wisdom, a journey around the whole earth, six-faced Kartikeya set off, lost in confusion, while you sat and devised a wise plan. You took hold of your mother's and father's feet and walked around them seven times. 'Blessed is Ganesha!' said Shiva, rejoicing in his heart, and the gods rained flowers from the sky. Your glory and the greatness of your wisdom cannot be sung even by thousand-mouthed Shesha. I am dull of mind, impure and sorrowful; how can I make my prayer to you? Ramsundar, servant of the Lord, sings your praise; Prayag, Kakra and Durvasa's hermitage are named as his place. Now, Lord, have mercy on this humble one, and grant me something of your strength and devotion. Those who recite this Chalisa of Shri Ganesha with attention have new blessings dwelling in their home every day and win honour in the world. In the year told as 'apan sahasra dash', on Rishi Panchami, a Sunday, this Chalisa was completed: Ganesha is the image of all that is auspicious.
