Dashavatara Stotram (Jayadeva) English Meaning

In the waters of the cosmic deluge you held the Veda safe, serving tirelessly as a boat. O Keshava, who took the body of a fish, victory to you, Hari, lord of the world! The vast earth rests on your back, broad and heavy with the round callus left by bearing it. O Keshava, who took the form of a tortoise, victory to you, Hari, lord of the world! The earth clings to the tip of your tusk like the dark mark sunk in the moon. O Keshava, who took the form of a boar, victory to you, Hari, lord of the world! On your fine lotus hand the nails are wondrous points that tore apart the body of Hiranyakashipu as one crushes a bee. O Keshava, who took the form of the man-lion, victory to you, Hari, lord of the world! With your great stride you outwitted Bali, O wondrous dwarf, who purify all beings with the water born from your toenail. O Keshava, who took the form of the dwarf, victory to you, Hari, lord of the world! You bathe the world in a flood of the blood of kshatriyas, washing away its sin and soothing the pain of existence. O Keshava, who took the form of Parashurama, lord of the Bhrigus, victory to you, Hari, lord of the world! In battle you scatter to the ten directions, as a lovely offering pleasing to their guardian gods, the crowned heads of ten-headed Ravana. O Keshava, who took the body of Rama, victory to you, Hari, lord of the world! On your fair body you wear a garment the colour of a rain-cloud, dark like the Yamuna, who came to you in fear of a blow from your plough. O Keshava, who took the form of Balarama, bearer of the plough, victory to you, Hari, lord of the world! Ah, with a merciful heart you censure the scriptural rules of sacrifice that sanction the killing of animals. O Keshava, who took the body of the Buddha, victory to you, Hari, lord of the world! To destroy the hordes of the lawless you wield a sword as terrible as a comet. O Keshava, who took the body of Kalki, victory to you, Hari, lord of the world! Hear this noble song spoken by the poet Jayadeva, which brings joy and blessing and is the essence of existence. O Keshava, who took these ten forms, victory to you, Hari, lord of the world! Salutations to you, Krishna, who took ten forms: who rescued the Vedas, carried the world, lifted up the globe of the earth, tore apart the demon, outwitted Bali, ended the kshatriyas, conquered Ravana, wielded the plough, spread compassion and struck down the lawless.

Significance

Dashavatara Stotram (Jayadeva) Significance

The first song (ashtapadi) of Jayadeva's twelfth-century Gita Govinda, praising Keshava, lord of the world, in each of his ten avatars: Fish, Tortoise, Boar, Man-lion, Dwarf, Parashurama, Rama, Balarama, Buddha and Kalki, with the refrain 'O Keshava, who took this form, victory to you, Hari, lord of the world'. Stanza 11 is the poet's signature, and stanza 12 is the verse that follows the song in the Gita Govinda (Vedān uddharate…), summing up all ten avatars; both are included, as in the sanskritdocuments text. It is widely sung on its own, in temple music and in classical dance.
