Meaning

Dakshinamurti Stotram English Meaning

I praise Dakshinamurti: the youthful teacher who makes the truth of the supreme Brahman plain through silent teaching, surrounded by aged sages steadfast in Brahman; the foremost of teachers, his hand held in the chin-mudra, the sign of consciousness; bliss in form, delighting in his own Self, his face glad. I bow to Lord Dakshinamurti, seated on the ground beside the banyan tree, who gives knowledge to all the sages gathered near him; teacher and lord of the three worlds, able to cut away the sorrow of birth and death. A marvel: at the foot of the banyan tree the disciples are old and the teacher is young. The teacher's explanation is silence, and yet the disciples' doubts are cut away. Salutations to Dakshinamurti, the treasury of all learning, the physician of those sick with worldly existence, the teacher of all the worlds. Om. Salutations to Dakshinamurti, who is the meaning of the syllable Om, the one embodiment of pure knowledge, stainless and wholly at peace. The universe lies within, like a city seen in a mirror, yet through maya it is seen as if it had arisen outside, as a dream does in sleep. He who, at the moment of awakening, directly knows his own Self, one without a second — to that Shri Dakshinamurti, embodied as the guru, this salutation. Like a sprout within a seed, this world lies at first without distinctions; then, through the variety of space, time and their reckoning, all fashioned by maya, it is painted in many forms. He who unfolds it by his own will, like a magician or a great yogi — to that Shri Dakshinamurti, embodied as the guru, this salutation. It is his shining alone, which is pure Being, that appears as the world of unreal things. Through the Vedic words "That thou art" he awakens directly those who come to him for refuge, and once he is realised there is no return to the ocean of birth and death — to that Shri Dakshinamurti, embodied as the guru, this salutation. Like the light of a great lamp set inside a pot pierced with many holes, his knowledge streams outward through the eye and the other senses. Only as he shines, as "I know", does this whole world shine after him — to that Shri Dakshinamurti, embodied as the guru, this salutation. Some take the body, the breath, the senses, the restless intellect, or the void to be the Self; such disputants are deeply deluded, comparable to women, children, the blind and the dull. He who destroys this great delusion conjured by the play of maya's power — to that Shri Dakshinamurti, embodied as the guru, this salutation. Like the sun or moon eclipsed by Rahu, a person covered by maya, his senses withdrawn, remains in deep sleep as pure Being alone; on waking he recognises, "I was asleep." He who is that one — to that Shri Dakshinamurti, embodied as the guru, this salutation. Through childhood and the other ages, through waking and the other states, which all come and go, the Self continues, always shining within as "I". He who reveals this Self to those who worship him through the auspicious gesture of knowledge — to that Shri Dakshinamurti, embodied as the guru, this salutation. He who, as this very person whirled about by maya, in dream or waking sees the world as divided — into cause and effect, owner and owned, disciple and teacher, father and son and so on — to that Shri Dakshinamurti, embodied as the guru, this salutation. Earth, water, fire, air, space, the sun, the moon and the individual soul: this moving and unmoving world appears as his eightfold form alone. For those who reflect, nothing exists apart from that supreme, all-pervading Lord — to that Shri Dakshinamurti, embodied as the guru, this salutation. Because this hymn makes plain that he is the Self of all, by hearing it, reflecting on its meaning, meditating on it and chanting it, one comes of oneself to lordship, together with the great glory of being the Self of all; and with it the eightfold power, unhindered.

Significance

Dakshinamurti Stotram Significance

Adi Shankaracharya's ten-verse hymn to Shiva as Dakshinamurti, the youthful teacher seated under the banyan tree who teaches through silence; each verse sets out a step of Advaita Vedanta and ends in salutation to the guru. It is recited by students of Vedanta, at the start of study and on Guru Purnima. Here the hymn is preceded by five traditional dhyana (meditation) verses, from मौनव्याख्या… to ॐ नमः प्रणवार्थाय…, which sanskritdocuments.org and Vignanam print before it; Stotra Nidhi and Wikisource give the ten verses alone.
