Chandrashekhara Ashtakam English Meaning

Chandrashekhara, Chandrashekhara, Chandrashekhara, protect me! Chandrashekhara, Chandrashekhara, Chandrashekhara, guard me! (Chandrashekhara: Shiva, who wears the moon as his crest.) His bow is the jewel-peaked mountain Meru and his home the summit of the silver mountain; the king of serpents is his bowstring and Vishnu with Agni his arrow; in an instant he burned the three cities, and the gods bow before him. I take refuge in Chandrashekhara; what can Yama, the god of death, do to me? His two lotus feet are lovely with the fragrance of flowers from the five trees of heaven; with the fire born of the eye in his forehead he burned the body of Manmatha, the god of love; his body is smeared with ash; he ends the round of birth, Bhava, the imperishable. I take refuge in Chandrashekhara; what can Yama, the god of death, do to me? Handsome in an upper garment made from the hide of a great maddened elephant; his lotus feet worshipped by lotus-seated Brahma and lotus-eyed Vishnu; bearing matted locks gleaming white and wet with the spray of the waves of the heavenly Ganga. I take refuge in Chandrashekhara; what can Yama, the god of death, do to me? Friend of Kubera, king of the yakshas; who destroyed the eyes of Bhaga; adorned with serpents; his lovely left side graced by Parvati, daughter of the king of mountains; his throat dark with poison; holding an axe and a deer. I take refuge in Chandrashekhara; what can Yama, the god of death, do to me? Wearing the coiled king of serpents as his earring, riding the bull; his glory praised by Narada and the great sages; lord of the worlds; slayer of Andhaka, a wish-granting tree to all who seek his shelter, the one who ends even Yama. I take refuge in Chandrashekhara; what can Yama, the god of death, do to me? The remedy for those sick with worldly existence, who takes away every calamity; destroyer of Daksha's sacrifice, holding the three gunas within himself, three-eyed; giver of the fruits of enjoyment and liberation, who destroys the whole mass of sin. I take refuge in Chandrashekhara; what can Yama, the god of death, do to me? Loving to his devotees, worshipped by all, an inexhaustible treasure, clothed in the directions; lord of all beings, higher than the highest, beyond measure, unsurpassed; whose form is the moon, water, the sun, the earth, fire, the sacrificer, wind and space. I take refuge in Chandrashekhara; what can Yama, the god of death, do to me? Who brings the universe into being, then is intent on sustaining it, and also withdraws the whole of creation; who dwells in every world; who sports day and night amid the hosts of the gana leaders. I take refuge in Chandrashekhara; what can Yama, the god of death, do to me? This hymn was made in Shiva's presence by the son of Mrikandu, when he stood in fear of death. Whoever recites it, wherever it may be, has no fear of death. Chandrashekhara himself gladly gives him a full span of life, health, wealth of every kind, and liberation without effort.

Significance

Chandrashekhara Ashtakam Significance

A hymn of the sage Markandeya to Shiva as Chandrashekhara, "he who wears the moon as his crest", each verse ending "I take refuge in Chandrashekhara; what can Yama do to me?". It recalls the legend of the boy Markandeya, whom Shiva protected from death, and is traditionally recited for freedom from the fear of death and for long life. The opening couplet, चन्द्रशेखर चन्द्रशेखर… पाहि माम्, is often sung as a refrain between the verses; it is printed once here, as in the sources.
