Meaning

Bilvashtakam English Meaning

Three-leafed, shaped like the three gunas, like Shiva's three eyes and his three-pronged weapon, destroying the sins of three lifetimes: I offer one bilva leaf to Shiva. With bilva leaves on three-forked stems, unbroken, tender and auspicious, I will worship Shiva: I offer one bilva leaf to Shiva. When the Lord of Nandi is worshipped with a whole, unbroken bilva leaf, people are cleansed of all their sins: I offer one bilva leaf to Shiva. The merit of giving even a single shaligram stone to the learned, the great merit of a soma sacrifice — such is the worth of one bilva leaf offered to Shiva. Thousands of millions of elephants given away, hundreds of vajapeya sacrifices, the great gift of ten million maidens in marriage — such is the worth of one bilva leaf offered to Shiva. The bilva tree, born from the body of Lakshmi and dear to Mahadeva, I offer up: I offer one bilva leaf to Shiva. To see the bilva tree and to touch it destroys sin, even the gravest sin: I offer one bilva leaf to Shiva. To the one who is Brahma at the root, Vishnu in the middle and Shiva at the tip: I offer one bilva leaf to Shiva. Whoever recites this sacred Bilvashtakam in the presence of Shiva is freed from all sins and reaches the world of Shiva.

Significance

Bilvashtakam Significance

A hymn on offering the three-leafed bilva (bael) leaf to Shiva, each verse ending "one bilva leaf, offered to Shiva", with a closing verse on the merit of reciting it. It is traditionally chanted while bilva leaves are offered to the Shiva Linga, especially on Mondays and in the month of Shravan. Versions differ in length: this is the eight-verse text with phalashruti numbered by sanskritdocuments.org and given by Stotra Nidhi; some versions add a verse on Kashi and Prayag, and a separate South Indian Bilvashtakam has about fourteen verses.
