Meaning

Bhagavad Gita Chapter 15 (Purushottama Yoga) English Meaning

The Blessed Lord said: They speak of an imperishable ashvattha, the sacred fig tree, with its roots above and its branches below, whose leaves are the Vedic hymns. Whoever knows it knows the Veda. Its branches spread below and above, nourished by the gunas, with the objects of the senses for their shoots; and below, in the world of men, its roots stretch on and on, binding through action. Its real form is not seen here, nor its end, nor its beginning, nor its ground. Cutting down this firmly rooted ashvattha with the strong axe of detachment, one should then seek that state from which those who reach it never return, thinking: 'I take refuge in that primal Person from whom this ancient stream of activity has flowed.' Free from pride and delusion, with the fault of attachment conquered, ever dwelling in the Self, with desires turned away, released from the pairs of opposites called pleasure and pain, the undeluded reach that imperishable state. Neither the sun nor the moon nor fire lights it up; those who go there do not return. That is my supreme abode. An eternal portion of myself, having become a living soul in the world of the living, draws to itself the five senses and the mind as the sixth, which rest in nature. When the lord of the body takes on a body and when he leaves it, he takes these with him and goes, as the wind carries scents from their source. Presiding over hearing, sight, touch, taste and smell, and over the mind, he experiences the objects of the senses. Whether he is departing, staying, or enjoying in union with the gunas, the deluded do not see him; those who have the eye of knowledge see him. Striving yogis see him dwelling within themselves; but those whose minds are unrefined and unaware do not see him, even when they strive. The light in the sun that lights up the whole world, the light in the moon and in fire: know that light to be mine. Entering the earth, I uphold all beings with my energy; and becoming Soma, whose nature is sap, I nourish all the plants. Becoming Vaishvanara, the fire of life, I dwell in the bodies of living beings and, joined with the in-breath and out-breath, digest the four kinds of food. I am seated in the hearts of all; from me come memory, knowledge and their loss. I alone am to be known through all the Vedas; I am the maker of Vedanta and the knower of the Vedas. There are two persons in this world, the perishable and the imperishable. All beings are the perishable; the unchanging one is called the imperishable. But the highest Person is another, called the Supreme Self, the imperishable Lord who enters the three worlds and sustains them. Because I am beyond the perishable and higher even than the imperishable, I am proclaimed in the world and in the Veda as Purushottama, the Supreme Person. Whoever, free from delusion, knows me thus as the Supreme Person knows all, and worships me with all his being, O Bharata. Thus, O sinless one, I have taught you this most secret teaching. Understanding it, a person becomes wise and has done all that needs to be done, O Bharata. Om Tat Sat. Thus, in the Upanishad of the glorious Bhagavad Gita, the knowledge of Brahman and scripture of yoga, in the dialogue between Sri Krishna and Arjuna, ends the fifteenth chapter, named the Yoga of the Supreme Person.

The fifteenth chapter of the Bhagavad Gita, the Yoga of the Supreme Person, in twenty verses.
