Significance
Asato Ma Sadgamaya Significance
Three short prayers from the Brihadaranyaka Upanishad (1.3.28), where they are given as words the sacrificer murmurs during the pavamana chants of the Soma rite; the Upanishad itself explains 'the unreal' and 'darkness' as death, and 'the real' and 'light' as immortality. They have become one of the best-known Hindu prayers, recited at the start or close of gatherings. In common recitation, given here, 'Om' is added before and the threefold 'shanti' after, and the last line is read 'mrityor ma amritam gamaya'.
