Beyond Lights and Diyas: Why Lakshmi maa and Ganesh ji Worshiped on Dipawali

October 7, 2025philosophy

As the crisp autumn air fills with the scent of marigolds and sweets, and the night sky prepares to be adorned with a thousand flickering lights, homes across India and beyond get ready for Dipawali. At the heart of this radiant festival of lights is a beautiful and deeply symbolic ritual: the worship of Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesh.

But have you ever wondered why this specific divine pair is worshipped together on this auspicious occasion? Dipawali is famously known as the festival when Shri Ram ji came from 14 years of exile after defeating Ravan. So, why is Lord Ganesh, and Maa Lakshmi is prayed?

The answer lies in a profound spiritual literatures that teaches us about the true nature of prosperity.

Goddess Lakshmi: The Bestower of Wealth and Fortune

Let's start with the more obvious connection. Goddess Lakshmi is the embodiment of wealth, fortune, prosperity, and abundance. Dipawali, especially the night of Amavasya (new moon), is believed to be the time when Maa Lakshmi illumined during the Samundra Manthan. Devotees light up their homes with diyas (earthen lamps) and create beautiful rangolis to welcome her, hoping she will bless them with material and spiritual riches for the coming year. One can realte it to janmotsav of Maa Lakshmi. Worshipping her is a prayer for success, well-being, and the vanquishing of poverty.

However, wealth on its own can be a fleeting and even corrupting force. This is where Lord Ganesh’s presence becomes indispensable.

Lord Ganesha: The God of Wisdom and New Beginnings

In Hindu tradition, Lord Ganesha holds a position of paramount importance. He is revered as Vighnaharta, the remover of all obstacles. No new venture, no auspicious ceremony, and no puja is ever considered complete without first invoking his blessings. By worshipping him first, we pray for a smooth, obstacle-free path ahead.

Furthermore, Ganesha is the deity of intellect (buddhi) and wisdom (gyan). He represents the consciousness and discernment needed to navigate life's challenges.

The Perfect Synergy: Why They Are Worshipped Together

The joint worship of Lakshmi and Ganesh on Dipawali is a powerful reminder that wealth must be accompanied by wisdom. Their pairing teaches us two fundamental lessons:

  1. Wealth without Wisdom is Perilous: Money and success without the intellect and wisdom to manage them can lead to arrogance, greed, and eventual ruin. Lord Ganesh’s presence ensures that the wealth bestowed by Goddess Lakshmi is earned through righteous means and utilized with intelligence and humility. He provides the buddhi to protect and grow the dhan (wealth). Essentially, we pray for prosperity that is stable, ethical, and beneficial, not just abundant.
  2. Obstacles Must Be Removed to Attain Prosperity: Before we can receive and retain wealth, the path to it must be cleared of impediments. As the Vighnaharta, Lord Ganesh removes the obstacles—be they in our business, our personal growth, or our spiritual journey—allowing the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi to flow into our lives freely and unimpeded.

There is a popular story that says Goddess Lakshmi, proud of her power, was told by Lord Vishnu that her divinity would be incomplete without motherhood. She adopted Lord Ganesha as her son, bestowing upon him the boon that wherever she is worshipped, he must be worshipped first for the devotee to truly receive her blessings.

So, this Dipawali, as you join your hands in prayer before the beautifully decorated idols of Ganesh ji and Lakshmi maa, remember the profound message they represent together. It is not just a prayer for riches, but a prayer for enlightened prosperity—a life where wealth and wisdom walk hand in hand, leading to true and lasting abundance.

Happy Dipawali!
